Oh, the smell of those delicious cookies baking in the oven. The aroma would permeate the whole house and heighten the anticipation. Finally, after much expectation and my patients wearing so thin I thought I would go out of my mind the buzzer would go off. Mom would open the oven door and suddenly the heat, aroma and the luscious site of those long awaited cookies would emerge from the oven. Then horror filled my whole being as I bit into the hot cookie, those were not chocolate chips, but raisins. Tears instantly flooded my eyes as I wailed, “where are the chocolate chips?”

Adrift in our memory banks are the smells and tastes of the food of our childhoods. One whiff of something familiar coming from the kitchen and we are instantly kids again. And no food is more closely aligned with that of childhood than the chocolate chip cookie. Warm and gooey, hard and crunchy, filled with nuts or deliciously plain, the chocolate chip cookie embodies all that is sweet and wonderful about childhood.

In this day and age with so many people going on diets and trying to lose weight I have to wonder about the future of homemade cookie making, it was not so long ago that when you went to some ones home to visit on Christmas or some other holiday there was always a batch of homemade cookies of various types and flavors to choose from.

Can we call cookies sweet temptations, you bet we can because they are, did you ever know anyone to turn down the offer of some cookies especially with a cup of coffee or a glass of cold milk.

Ok, so admittedly, I am sitting here taking a little breather and eating my 4th, or is it 10th (?) chocolate chip cookie of the day. It’s not quite as enjoyable as the first, but I know I will eat it anyway. Oh, you ask, “Why is it not as good as the first?” Well, it is because this one can’t be rationalized away – this one is just plain over-the-top, filled with guilt, packed with pain and too much of a good thing.
